Retired Staff Sergeant Shawn Jones, better known to his family and friends as Jonesy, was born in Mount Pleasant, PA. He moved around a lot as a child, but his family settled in Monroeville, PA where he graduated high school. In 2001, Shawn felt the need for a major change in his life and decided to join the US Army.
After completing Basic, Advanced Individual Training and Airborne School, Shawn was deployed to Kosovo. In 2003, he was deployed to Iraq, where his platoon ran Explosive Ordnance Disposal missions. In 2006, Shawn performed Route Clearance Operations in Afghanistan, searching for IEDs, as well as providing Engineer support during Infantry Operations. His platoon was ambushed during one of their operations, and for his actions, Shawn was awarded the Army Commendation Medal with “V” Device for Valor. During his second tour of Afghanistan in 2010, Shawn was injured when his vehicle was struck by an IED and on September 24, 2012, Shawn’s decorated military career came to an end when he medically retired.
